Paleothyris was named by Carroll (1969). It is not extant. Its type is Paleothyris acadiana.
It was assigned to Romeriidae by Carroll (1969); to Romeriida by Gauthier et al. (1988), Gauthier et al. (1989), Laurin and Reisz (1995); and to Protorothyrididae by Carroll (1988), Haubold et al. (2005).
