Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
W. G. Joyce et al. 2022Chelydropsis aubasi sp. nov. can be diagnosed as a representative of Chelydroidea by the development of a cruciform plastron, strap-like epiplastra that cover the lateral margins of the hyoplastra, the absence of pectorals, and the loss of a midline contact of the abdominals. Chelydropsis aubasi can furthermore be diagnosed as a representative of Pan-Chelydridae by the presence of a low carapace formed by notably thin neurals and costals, vertebrals and pleurals that form plications along their anterior margins, an “epiplastral beak” (i.e., an upturned lip formed along the anterior margin of the plastron), presence of intergulars (homoplastically developed in other chelydroids), strap-like xiphiplastra that cover the lateral margins of the hypoplastra, and an anal that covers the posterior portions of the hypoplastron.
I. Pappa et al. 2024Following the scheme of Joyce (2016), the specimen described herein is a member of Pan- Chelydridae because of the combination of the following diagnostic features: the absence of nasals( symplesiomorphy), exclusion of the frontals from the orbits, parietal does not contact squamosal, reduced cruciform plastron, absence of pectorals and extragulars, abdominals not in contact in the median line of the plastron, presence of three contiguous inframarginals, presence of an enclosed incisura columella auris, tongued-shaped projections of the epiplastra, paired intergulars
