Herbstosaurus was named by Casamiquela (1975). Its type is Herbstosaurus pigmaeus.
It was assigned to Coeluridae by Casamiquela (1975); to Pterosauria by Bonaparte (1981); to Pterodactylidae by Carroll (1988); to Dsungaripteroidea by Unwin and Heinrich (1999); to Dsungaripteroidea by Unwin (2003); and to Pterodactyloidea by Galton (1981) and Codorniú and Gasparini (2007).
