Taxonomy
Placerias was named by Lucas (1904). Its type is Placerias hesternus. It is the type genus of Placeriinae.
It was assigned to Dicynodontidae by Hay (1930); to Placeriini by King (1988); to Kannemeyeriidae by Cox (1965), Carroll (1988) and Long and Murry (1995); and to Placeriinae by Kammerer et al. (2013).
