Atopocrinidae was named by Messing (2011) [Family based on comatulid crinoid Atopocrinus Clark 1912, both homonyms for the disparid crinoid genus Atopocrinus Lane 1970 and family Atopocrinidae Warn and Strimple 1977.]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Comatulidina by Hess and Messing (2011).
