Ambystoma tiheni was named by Holman (1968) [An Ambystoma similar in size and vertebral proportions to the Ambystoma opacum species group of TIHEN (1958) but differing in having neural arch more depressed, foramina on ventral part of centrum obsolete or absent, ends of centrum less widely flared, and transverse processes usually more robust.].
