Taxonomy
Tyto was named by Billberg (1828). It is extant. It is the type genus of Tytonidae.
It was assigned to Tytoninae by Wetmore (1956); to Strigiformes by Guthrie (1992); and to Tytonidae by Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), Morgan (1994), Burney et al. (2008), Meijer et al. (2013), Clements et al. (2017), Sánchez‐Marco (2021).
