Gallinula was named by Brisson (1760). It is extant. It is the type genus of Gallinulinae.
It was assigned to Grallae by De Vis (1892); to Gallinulinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Brodkorb (1967); and to Rallidae by Wetmore (1924), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1933), Olson (1975), Olson (1977), Olson and James (1982), Carroll (1988), Baird (1992), Worthy (1997), Mlikovsky (2002), Worthy and Grant-Mackie (2003), Boles (2005), Burney et al.
