Palaeorallus was named by Wetmore (1931).

It was assigned to Rallinae by Wetmore (1940), Brodkorb (1967); and to Rallidae by Wetmore (1931), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1956), Olson (1977), Carroll (1988).
