Thylacosmilidae was named by Riggs (1933). It is not extant. Its type is Thylacosmilus. It was considered monophyletic by de Muizon (1999).
It was assigned to Didelphoidea by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Borhyaenoidea by de Muizon (1994), de Muizon (1999); and to Sparassodonta by Goin et al. (2013).
