Panochthus frenzelianus was named by Ameghino (1889) [see Fernicola, et al. 2014 for details on the proper Type specimen.]. Its type specimen is AMNH FM 11245?-116, FM 11243, a mandible (mandible and cephalic shield), and it is a 3D body fossil.
