Bambusium was named by Unger (1845). It is not extant. Its type is Bambusium sepultum.

It was assigned to Gramineae by Knowlton (1919); to Plantae by Andrews (1970); and to Bambusoideae by Wang and Zhou (2013) and Wang and Sun (2014).
