Pliopithecus was named by Gervais (1849). Its type is Pithecus antiquus. It is the type genus of Pliopithecini.
It was assigned to Anthropomorphae by Schlosser (1877); to Pliopithecidae by Ciochon and Corruccini (1977), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Pliopithecini by Harrison and Gu (1999); and to Pliopithecinae by Harrison et al. (1991), Alba et al. (2009).
