Proconsul was named by Hopwood (1933). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Dryopithecinae by Pilbeam et al. (1977); to Pongidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Proconsulinae by Harrison and Andrews (2009); and to Proconsulidae by Andrews (1992), Harrison and Gu (1999), Zalmout et al. (2010), McNulty et al. (2015).
