Leakitherium was named by Savage (1965). Its type is Leakitherium hiwegi.
It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Hyaenodontinae by Savage (1965), Van Valen (1967), Morales et al. (2007); to Hyainailourinae by Solé et al. (2014); to Hyainailourini by Solé et al. (2015); to Dissopsalini by Morales and Pickford (2017); and to Hyainailourinae by Borths and Stevens (2017).
