Taxonomy
Uintacyon was named by Leidy (1873) [also said to be 1871 and 1872]. Its type is Uintacyon edax. It is the type genus of Uintacyonidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Miacis by Scott (1892).
It was assigned to Uintacyonidae by Hay (1902); to Caniformia by Flynn and Galiano (1982); to Miacinae by Hooker (1986); to Carnivora by Leidy (1873), Silcox et al. (2010); to Miacidae by Flynn (1998), Friscia and Rasmussen (2010), Rose et al. (2012); and to Carnivoraformes by Solé (2014), Solé et al. (2016).
It was synonymized subjectively with Miacis by Scott (1892).
