Crossarchus was named by Cuvier (1825) [in E. Geffroy-Hillaire & Cuvier (1825)]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Viverrina by Gray (1825); to Herpestinae by Mivart (1882); to Viverridae by Carroll (1988); and to Herpestidae by Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
