Murex (Phyllonotus) santarosana was named by Dall (1905). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 130628, a shell.
It was recombined as Purpura (Jaton) santarosana by Willett (1937); it was recombined as Murex santarosanus by Valentine (1958); it was recombined as Maxwellia santarosana by Kanakoff and Emerson (1959); it was recombined as Murexiella santarosana by Skoglund (2002), Hendy (2021).
