Hypsimylus was named by Zhai (1977). Its type is Hypsimylus beijingensis.
It was assigned to Eurymyloidea by Zhai (1977); to Hypsimylinae by Dashzeveg and Russell (1988); to Mimotonidae by Carroll (1988); to Lagomorpha by Meng and Hu (2004); to Palaeolaginae by Meng et al. (2005); and to Leporidae by Meng et al. (2005).
