Elymys was named by Korth and Emry (1989). It is not extant. Its type is Elymys complexus.

It was assigned to Zapodidae by Korth and Emry (1989), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Dipodoidea by Gomes Rodrigues et al. (2010).
