Anthracothema was named by Pilgrim (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Anthracotherium pangan.
It was synonymized subjectively with Anthracotherium by Ducrocq (1999), Tsubamoto et al. (2002).
It was assigned to Anthracotheriidae by Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Hippopotamoidea by Scherler et al. (2019).
