Heptacodon was named by Marsh (1894). Its type is Elomeryx armatus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Anthracotherium by Osborn and Wortman (1894), Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909) and Cook (1912).
It was assigned to Bothriodontinae by Scott (1940); to Embrithopoda by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Anthracotheriidae by Marsh (1894), Troxell (1921), Hay (1930), Macdonald (1956), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Kron and Manning (1998); and to Anthracotheriinae by Scherler et al. (2019).
