Plioceros was named by Frick (1937). It is not extant. Its type is Plioceros blicki.
It was synonymized subjectively with Sphenophalos by Stirton (1938), Webb (1969), Webb (1973) and Miller and Downs (1974).
It was assigned to Antilocapridae by Frick (1937), Woodburne and Golz (1972), Tedford (1981), Janis and Scott (1987), Tedford et al. (1987), Carroll (1988), Voorhies (1990), Leite (1991), Lozinsky and Tedford (1991), Whistler and Burbank (1992), Tedford and Barghoorn (1993) and Janis and Manning (1998).
