Tangaroasaurus was named by Benham (1935). It was considered monophyletic by Muizon (1987).
It was assigned to Ichthyosauria by Benham (1935); to Odontoceti by Fordyce (1979); to Squalodontoidea by Pledge and Rothausen (1977), Fordyce (1980) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Squalodontidae by Keyes (1973), Whitmore and Sanders (1977), Muizon (1987), Carroll (1988), Ortega and Fordyce (2009) and Fordyce and Roberts (2009).
