Trophon (Forreria) coalingense was named by Arnold (1909). Its type specimen is USNM 165540, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Trophon coalingense by Nomland (1916); it was recombined as Forreria coalingensis by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Forreria coalingense by Keen and Bentson (1944).
