Acronuroides eocaenicus
Taxonomy
Acronuroides eocaenicus was named by Bannikov et al. (2019). Its type specimen is MCSNV IG 135601, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Monte Bolca (Canossa collection), which is in a Ypresian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Italy. It is the type species of Acronuroides.

Bannikov et al. 2019 | A percomorph fish unique in having the following combination of characters: discoid body physiognomy; vertebrae 8+13=22; neural and haemal spines of middle region of vertebral column broad and relatively vertically oriented; many abdominal vertebrae with long, broad parapophyses; pleural ribs vertically oriented, relatively short and slender, present on third to eighth vertebrae; all five hypurals, parhyphral, and haemal spines of PU2 and PU3 autogenous; caudal fin rounded, 1,7-7,1, with five procurrent rays above and six below; dorsal fin long and continuous, with number of spines uncertain but probably seven; 23 to 24 dorsal-fin rays; first dorsal-fin pterygiophore in preneural space; no vacant interneural spaces; anal fin with three spines of graduated length and about 20 rays; dorsal and anal rays with small lateral spinules; single postcleithrum; scales small, with a single upright spiny spinule (perhaps more in larger specimens); a slightly enlarged scale on the caudal peduncle. |
