Taxonomy
Gempylidarum merus was named by Schwarzhans (2003). Its type specimen is MGUH 26226, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sample M2, Fakse Quarry, which is in a Danian basin reef bafflestone in Denmark.
