Cottoideorum suspectus was named by Schwarzhans (1980). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is GS 12288, D45/f080, which is in a Clifdenian marine horizon in New Zealand.

It was recombined as Antennarius suspectus by Schwarzhans (2019).
