Taxonomy
Tongarewa waihaonesis was named by Schwarzhans (2019). Its type specimen is NMNZ S.47595, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SH82 & south end of Shearers Hill Road., which is in an Otaian marine siltstone in the Mount Harris Formation of New Zealand.
