Sphagesauridae was named by Kuhn (1968). It was considered paraphyletic by Turner and Sertich (2010).
It was considered an invalid subgroup of Mesoeucrocodylia by Pol (2003); it was reranked as the unranked clade Sphagesauridae by Pinheiro et al. (2021), Ruiz et al. (2021).
It was assigned to Notosuchia by Marinho and Carvalho (2009); to Notosuchia by Andrade and Bertini (2008), Turner and Sertich (2010); to Ziphosuchia by Pol et al. (2014); and to Sphagesauria by Pinheiro et al. (2021), Ruiz et al. (2021).
