Cyathophyllum pentagonum was named by Goldfuss (1826). It is the type species of Frechastraea.
It was recombined as Favastrea pentagona by de Blainville (1830); it was recombined as Astrea pentagona by Lonsdale (1840) and Phillips (1841); it was recombined as Acervularia pentagona by Michelin (1845), Edwards and Haime (1851), McCoy (1851), Meek (1877), Walcott (1884); it was recombined as Lithostrotion pentagonum by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Frechastraea pentagona by Brownlaw and Jell (2008), Eichholt et al. (2021).
