Cromyechinus was named by Haeckel (1882) [4e. Tribe: Cromyommida. Tetrasphaeria with many spines (spines many, eight or more, usually scattered without definite arrangement). A. With the spines simple. AII. With secondary spines between the main spines. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Haeckel (1882).

It was assigned to Radiolaria by Haeckel (1882).
