Taxonomy
Anthracosaurus raniceps was named by Goldenberg (1873). It is not extant. Its type locality is Gersweiler, which is in a Westphalian D terrestrial horizon in the Auerswald coal seam Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Eurypterus raniceps by Waterlot (1934); it was recombined as Adelophthalmus raniceps by Tetlie and Poschmann (2008).
