Dinictis felina was named by Leidy (1854) [genotype]. It is the type species of Deinictis.

It was recombined as Deinictis felina by Hay (1902).

Daptophilus squalidens was named by Cope (1873) [genotype].

It was recombined as Dinictis squalidens by Cope (1879), Cope (1880), Matthew (1910), Thorpe (1920), Scott and Jepsen (1936), Galbreath (1953); it was recombined as Deinictis squalidens by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Dinictis felina by Bryant (1996), Barrett (2016).
Dinictis bombifrons was named by Adams (1895). Its type locality is Terry's Ranch, which is in a Whitneyan terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.

It was recombined as Deinictis bombifrons by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Dinictis fortis by Thorpe (1920); it was synonymized subjectively with Dinictis felina by Bryant (1996), Barrett (2016).
Dinictis cyclops was named by Cope (1879).

It was recombined as Deinictis cyclops by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Nimravus brachyops by Toohey (1959); it was synonymized subjectively with Dinictis felina by Barrett (2016).
Dinictis fortis was named by Adams (1895).

E. D. Cope 1873 (Daptophilus squalidens)	Third premolar with the anterior basal tubercle very large, equalling, relatively, the corresponding lobe of the carnassial (much smaller in Dinictisfel'i-nct). Second premolar two-rooted. Enamel smooth. Ramus decnrved at symphysis. Superior canine in shape like a tooth of a shark of the genus O:cyrhinci; flat within, slightly convex without; th~ front cutting edge turned inwards at the basis.
