Dipsalidictis platypus was named by Matthew and Granger (1915) [genotype]. Its type locality is SC-67, which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the Willwood Formation of Wyoming.
It was recombined as Oxyaena platypus by Denison (1938), Van Valen (1966), Rose (1981).
