Elotherium was named by Pomel (1847) [type European E. magnum, not the same as Entelodon magnum].
It was reranked as Ammodon (Elotherium) by Marsh (1893); it was considered a nomen dubium by Peterson (1909), Troxell (1920), Scott (1940), Russell (1980), Effinger (1998).
It was assigned to Anthracotheridae by Leidy (1873); to Artiodactyla by Cope (1891); to Ammodon by Marsh (1893); and to Achaenodontinae by Hay (1902).
