Taxonomy
Marmota was named by Frisch (1775) [type European Mus marmorata Linnaeus; also said to be Blumenbach 1779, on argument that Frisch names are unavailable: see Hall 1981]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Marmotinae by Frase and Hoffmann (1980); to Sciuridae by Frisch (1775), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wilson (1967), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Marmotini by Mercer and Roth (2003), Helgen et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Marmotinae by Frase and Hoffmann (1980); to Sciuridae by Frisch (1775), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wilson (1967), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Marmotini by Mercer and Roth (2003), Helgen et al. (2009).
