Tephrocyon confertus was named by Matthew (1918). Its type locality is Snake Creek Fauna, which is in a Barstovian/Clarendonian channel sandstone in Nebraska.
It was recombined as Tomarctus confertus by Matthew (1924), Green (1948), Hough (1948), Downs (1956); it was recombined as Microtomarctus conferta by Wang et al. (1999), Wang et al. (2008).
