Didelphia was named by Cope (1889). It is extant.

It was reranked as the superorder Didelphia by Hay (1902); it was reranked as the suborder Didelphii by Jaekel (1911); it was reranked as the subclass Didelphia by Hay (1930).

It was assigned to Eutheria by Cope (1889) and Hay (1902); to Haplodonti by Jaekel (1911); to Mammalia by Hay (1930); and to Marsupialia by McKenna and Bell (1997).
