Cyphaspis barrandei was named by Hawle and Corda (1847). It is the type species of Novakaspis.

It was recombined as Novakaspis barrandei by Pribyl (1947); it was recombined as Otarion (Cyphaspis) barrandei by Chlupac (1982), Chlupac (1983).
