Chelydropsis heweneggensis

Reptilia - Testudines - Chelydridae

Discussion

The specific epithet of Chelydropsis heweneggensis sp. nov. comes from the name of the study area. Hwenegg (formerly Hewenegg) is a world-famous palaeontological locality in Germany, from where many large vertebrates, mainly artio- and perissodactyls have been excavated during the past decades. The nomenclatural act has been registered under the LSID urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:0C3B2350-88CB-4BA4-96D1-B2A25C44011F.

Taxonomy
Chelydropsis heweneggensis was named by Pappa et al. (2024). Its type specimen is SMNK-PAL 9115, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Höwenegg, which is in a MN 9/MN 10 lacustrine horizon in Germany.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
I. Pappa et al. 2024The new taxon is a member of Chelydropsis because of the exclusion
of jugal from the orbit. Chelydropsis heweneggensis sp. nov. is associated with Chelydropsis aubasi and differs from all other comparable Chelydropsis spp. in the wide humerals that extend onto the bridge and contact the inframarginals and the hyohypoplastron suture placed below the anterior border of the inguinal inframarginal (IM3). Chelydropsis heweneggensis sp. nov. differs from Chelydropsis aubasi in the extent of the humerals on the bridge (they extend more laterally to our species compared to Chelydropsis aubasi), the more rounded and slightly quadrangular shape of the anterior lobe (more triangular in Chelydropsis aubasi), and the much larger size (our taxon has nearly twice the length of the plastron compared to Chelydropsis aubasi). Although not an anatomical character, it is important to note the significant geological age difference between the two taxa.
