Eutamias sonomae was named by Grinnell (1915). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Eutamias townsendii by Howell (1929); it was synonymized subjectively with Tamias townsendii by Johnson (1943), Piaggio and Spicer (2000); it was recombined as Neotamias sonomae by Piaggio and Spicer (2001).
