It was reranked as Citellus (Otospermophilus) by Bryant (1945); it was synonymized subjectively with Citellus by Shotwell (1956) and Black (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Spermophilus by Hall (1981), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Korth (1994), Sutton and Korth (1995).
It was assigned to Sciuridae by Schultz and Howard (1935); to Citellus by Bryant (1945); and to Marmotini by Helgen et al. (2009).
