Pleurodictyum dunbari was named by Merriam (1973). Its type specimen is USNM 159522 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS M409, Rabbit Hill, which is in a Pragian carbonate limestone in the Rabbit Hill Limestone Formation of Nevada.
