Palaeotherium proutii was named by Leidy (1850). It is the type species of Titanotherium.
It was recombined as Titanotherium proutii by Leidy (1852), Leidy (1853), Leidy (1856), Leidy (1857) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Menodus proutii by Cope (1886), Cope (1889), Cope (1891) and Osborn (1929); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1989) and Mader (1998).
