Pteranodontia was named by Marsh (1876). It was considered monophyletic by Unwin (2003).

It was reranked as the family Pteranodontia by Günther (1886); it was reranked as the order Pteranodontia by Perrier (1928); it was synonymized subjectively with Pteranodontidae by Kellner (2010); it was reranked as the unranked clade Pteranodontia by Fernandes et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Pterosauria by Marsh (1876); to Ornithosauria by Günther (1886); to Pterosauria by Perrier (1928); to Euornithocheira by Unwin (2003); to Ornithocheiroidea by Andres and Myers (2013); and to Pterodactyloidea by Headden and Campos (2014), Fernandes et al. (2022).

E. Perrier 1928Un bec pointu, sans dénis, comprimé latéralement. Symphyse mandibulaire très longue. Une longue crête, postérieure fortement saillante en arrière et dont la carène supérieure se continue en avant jusqu'au bout du museau. Narines réunies à la foyse préorbitaire. Queue courte. Omoplate articulée avec les apophyses épineuses fusionnées des vertèbres dorsales.
