Ziphioidea was named by Gray (1850). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001) and Uhen et al. (2008).
It was synonymized subjectively with Rhynchoceti by Huxley (1864); it was reranked as the superfamily Ziphioidea by Gray (1868); it was reranked as the suborder Ziphioidea by Gray (1871).
It was assigned to Denticete by Gray (1868) and Gray (1871); to Physeterida by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); to Odontoceti by Fraser and Purves (1960), Barnes et al. (1985), Vidal (1991), Fordyce and Barnes (1994), Fordyce et al. (1995), Rice (1998), Rice (2002), Gingerich (2005), Whitmore and Kaltenbach (2008) and Uhen et al.
