Ophiomyxa was named by Müller and Troschel (1842). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ophiomyxidae.
It was assigned to Ophiomyxinae by Matsumoto (1915) and Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiomyxidae by Ljungman (1867), Jagt (2000), Storc and Zitt (2008) and O'Hara et al. (2018).
