Murchisonia oehlerti was named by Blodgett et al. (1999). Its type locality is Ti12--Tibidy outcrop, which is in a Givetian carbonate shale/siltstone in the Kersadiou Formation of France.
It was replaced with Murchisonia gourvenneci by Blodgett et al. (2003).
