L. G. Barnes et al. 1995 | A species of Aetiocetus differing from all other species of Aetiocetus by having narrower intertemporal region, occipital shield more triangular, sloping anteriorly, and bearing a mid-sagittal crest near its apex, lambdoidal crests flaring dorsolaterally and overhanging temporal fossae, more prominent temporal crests on supraorbital processes overhanging temporal fossae, temporal crests continuous with parasagittal crests that extend posteriorly to contact the supraoccipital shield, paroccipital process more massive and more expanded anteroposteriorly, and squamosal fossa more anteroposteriorly elongate; differing from A. tomitai by having cranium with narrower inter- temporal region, longer postorbital processes of the frontals, occipital condyles closer together both dorsally and ventrally; differing from A. cotylalveus by having cranium with nasals much wider and with broadly curved and elevated anterior extremities rather than being narrow and tapered, zygomatic process more slender and elongate, notch between dorsal parts of occipital condyles narrower, by having dentition more nearly homodont, the posterior teeth being more pointed rather than expanded anteroposteriorly by the presence of accessory cusps, and by having 13 or 14 upper teeth on each side of the palate rather than 11; and differing from Aetiocetus weltoni by having cranium with nasals slightly wider and with broadly curved and upturned anterior extremities rather than being narrow, tapered, and flat, zygomatic process more slender and elongate, notch between dorsal parts of occipital condyles narrower, by having dentition more nearly homodont, the posterior teeth being more pointed rather than expanded anteroposteriorly by the presence of accessory cusps, and by having a tooth count of 13-14/ 14-15 rather than 11/12. |
